The original scheme called for a new home for the Metropolitan Opera, but the Depression overturned it. John D. Rockefeller Jr. instead developed a 22-acre complex of 19 commercial buildings, linked by a sunken plaza and crowned by the limestone-clad tower at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
