The temple is a 1968 replica of a 950-year-old temple in Uji, Japan, built to mark the centennial of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. Inside, an 18-foot gold-leaf Amida Buddha sits in the main hall; a bell, koi pond and peacocks fill the grounds beneath the Koʻolau Mountains.
