It began as Plaza Mayor, then became Plaza de la Constitución before taking its present name. A bronze statue of Simón Bolívar stands at the center, made by Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani and unveiled in 1846. The square is framed by the cathedral, Capitol, city hall and Palace of Justice.
