Five major buildings form a single civic frame in pink and yellow tuff, with neoclassical shapes and Armenian motifs. An oval roundabout meets a trapezoid section containing a pool with musical fountains. Alexander Tamanian designed the square in 1924; the National Gallery, its last building, was completed in 1977.
