The gurdwara stands on the spot where Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur is said to have offered himself for arrest to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1675. Its huge white façades surround surviving Mughal-era towers, linking a Sikh shrine to an older Mughal site.
