An ancient Egyptian obelisk rises at the square’s centre, where it was erected in 1586. Nearly a century later, Gian Lorenzo Bernini shaped the space with Tuscan colonnades four columns deep, curving toward St. Peter’s Basilica. A granite fountain by Bernini from 1675 matches one designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613.
