A moat once separated this square from the Kremlin; it was paved over in 1812. Almost 73,000 square metres stretch east of the Kremlin and north of the Moskva River, bordered by Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum and GUM. Executions, riots, parades and speeches have all taken place here.
