Queen Victoria changed the proposed name from Central Hall of Arts and Sciences when she laid the foundation stone in 1867, dedicating it to Prince Albert. The hall opened in 1871 and has hosted the BBC Proms every summer since 1941, alongside concerts, opera, ballet and film screenings with live orchestras.
