One of its three auditoriums sits below ground on Seventh Avenue. The five-story Stern Auditorium holds 2,790 seats, while the smaller halls bring the complex’s total to three rooms. Built between 1889 and 1891 for two music societies, it later survived a demolition proposal through a public campaign led by Isaac Stern.
