Five ways to keep the count — and one that can check it.
There are a lot of apps that colour in a world map, and most of them are good at it. They differ less than the App Store makes it look, so this page compares them on the two things that actually vary: how much detail the map holds, and whether anything behind it is checked.
Every one of them records what you tell it. None of their App Store descriptions offers to check any of it, and the paper map on the wall does not either.

How to choose
Four questions that separate them
Every app on this list will fill a map with colour. These are the things that differ once you have used one for a year.
How fine is the map? Countries only, or states, regions and cities too? If you have been to fourteen US states, a country-level map records one visit and loses thirteen.
Is a visit an entry or a record? Some of these hold dates, photos and notes against a place. Others hold a number. Both are legitimate — a diary is more work to keep.
Does anything check the claim? This is the one that genuinely divides the group, and the answer for four of the five is no. It only matters if you want the number to mean something to someone else.
What happens between trips? A counter is only open when you get home. Whether an app gives you a reason to open it in the eleven months in between decides if you are still using it next year.

A world map you colour in, with a catalogue of 222 quests behind it. A quest sits on a real place; you take a photo there and the browser reads its geotag and measures the distance to the point. Inside 200 m it counts.
It is also the only one here that is not only a tracker: audioguides written for the place you are standing in, day-by-day walking routes with real street timings, and flights and hotels beside them.

The plainest of them, and the oldest. If you want the number and the continent ratios with nothing else in the way, it does that and stops.

“Not claimed” means exactly that: the app’s own App Store description does not offer to verify a visit. It is not a statement about code nobody outside those teams has read.

Pick by what you want the map to be
These are genuinely different products wearing the same coat of paint. The honest recommendation depends on which of the four questions above you cared about.
If you want the finest-grained map
Visited. Regional maps for over 20 countries and more than 150 categories of list — the deepest of the group at recording where you have been, and the most work to keep up.
If you want a diary, not a counter
Pin Traveler. A pin holds dates, photos, restaurants and notes, and the trips read back in order. Choose it if you will forget the name of the place before you forget the trip.
If you want the number and nothing else
been. Countries, US states, a ratio per continent, a map you can share. It is the oldest and the plainest, and there is a real argument for a tool that does one thing.
If you liked the scratch map itself
Skratch. The closest of these to the poster, and it also sells travel eSIMs in 200+ locations, which no other app here does.
If you want the count to be worth something
GetMap. A photo taken within 200 m of a quest point is the difference between a number you assert and a number you can show. It is also the one to pick if you want the map to do anything in the months between trips — the quests, the audioguides and the route planner are all the same map.
Where GetMap is behind: these apps have been at this for years and have the ratings to show for it, and several hold more detail per country than GetMap does today. GetMap has no offline maps, and none are planned.
